When Is Father's Day?
In the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, Father's Day falls on the third Sunday in June each year. Like Mother's Day, it is not a federal holiday but is widely celebrated with gifts, meals out, and family time. Father's Day varies internationally — Australia and New Zealand celebrate on the first Sunday of September.
The History of Father's Day
Father's Day was inspired by Mother's Day. Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, proposed a day to honor fathers after listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910. It took decades to gain national recognition — President Richard Nixon signed it into law as a permanent national holiday in 1972.
Father's Day Gift Ideas
Traditional Father's Day gifts include neckties, grilling accessories, and sporting goods, but personalized gifts consistently rank as most appreciated. Experiences — a round of golf, tickets to a game, or a fishing trip — are increasingly popular. A handwritten letter or a photo book of memories can be more meaningful than any product. Planning ahead with a countdown is a great way to build anticipation for whatever you have planned.
