When Is Mother's Day?
In the United States, Canada, Australia, and many other countries, Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday in May every year. In the UK and Ireland, Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which falls in March. Mother's Day is one of the most commercially significant holidays of the year — restaurants, florists, and gift retailers all see major spikes in business.
The History of Mother's Day
The modern Mother's Day holiday in the US was founded by Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for a day to honor mothers after her own mother died in 1905. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as a national holiday. Interestingly, Jarvis later became disillusioned with the commercial nature the holiday took on, calling it a 'Hallmark holiday' and campaigning against it.
Mother's Day Gift Ideas
Flowers remain the most popular Mother's Day gift — carnations were Anna Jarvis's original symbol for the holiday. Brunch or dinner out together is consistently the top activity. Personalized gifts like photo books, custom jewelry, or a heartfelt letter often mean more than expensive purchases. A shared experience — a spa day, a cooking class, or a weekend trip — creates lasting memories beyond any physical gift.
